Hello everyone, this was a very different but wonderful day.
We left this morning in search of Ron's ancestrial roots, we had some basic places to find and had lots of fun doing it. However, I depend on someone charging the camera and unfortunately after all the pictures I took yesterday the battery died on me today. Oh well....
Our aim was to head for Portneuf county to look for St. Augustin, St. Basile and St Christien, and only by luck we found all three.
St. Augustin was actually only about 10 kms out of Quebec and we found the church easy enough, however it turns out that it is the second church built, the first before 1850 was in Old St. Augustin which does no longer exist. We did look through the cemetary anyway and found lots of Fisets so that was interesting.
In looking for Old St. Augustin which would have been closer to the river, we took a little walk, going down we went along the path through the trees and got eaten by those lovely mosquitos, so returning we took the road in the sunshine and found a lovely creature wanting his picture taken.
From here we drove the Kings Highway to Portneuf, it was the most beautiful countryside you could imagine, the kind you see in picture books. Just about to Portneuf, I spied the sign for St. Basile, what luck. Found the cemetary right off but the older graves were in very poor condition, however we found a ton of Fisets, Papillions and Plamondons, have to go home and do some more research.
Leaving St. Basile we stopped by their church and coming out we see the sign for St. Christien only 12 km away. Very little town, easy to find the church and behind it the cemetary, now here were so many family members, quite a find.
On our way home we travelled the freeway 40, a little congested over the bridge as it was rush hour but getting not bad at directions. Home in time to sit outside in the sun and take it easy, what a life.
For the family:
Grandad Ernest Fiset from Lumby was born in St. Christien de Portneuf as well as were most of his brothers and sisters. The family lived here from approx. 1895 to after 1912 when they moved to Saskatchewan(do not know what year that actually was)
Grandad Ernests father and mother were both born in St. Basile, Ernest's mother Cecile Papillions parents were both buried there and his father(Pierre) mother Zoe Plamondon.
The family lived in St. Basile from approx 1864 to death except for those that moved the short distance to St. Christien.
St. Augustin was home to the next couple generations of Fiset's, they lived here from approx 1780 to 1864, with many ancestors buried around the area.
Now before St. Augustin the Fiset family came from the eastern side of Quebec which we will research another day, the parishs of Montmorency and L'Ange Gardien.
Ron was pleased with his day.
To touch part of your family history...amazing!
