Jamestown

Yesterday we made our way from Washington DC to Williamsburg Virginia, it was Sunday so the traffic was a little lighter, at least not so many trucks.
The scenery on the way down was wonderful, here the trees are just starting to turn colors and there are alot of them. Our RV park is right downtown so it is so close to everything.

This morning we headed off the the Jamestown settlement which is about 8 miles away, here was the first permanent settlement in the United States. They came in 1607 and half of them were dead before the winter even began.

Some will remember the events here as the chief of the Powhatans was Pocahontas who by the way did not marry John Smith but John Rolfe, so much for believeing what Walt Disney tells us.

The Indians they met up with were the Powhatans, here is an idea of their village.

After a couple unfriendly events with the indians the colonists decided to build a fort, but this was useless as the Indians sat outside in the bushes so the colonists could not go out to hunt, fish or gather food, so soon they were starving.

They came on three small ships, the Godspeed, the Susan Constant and the Discovery, not one was big enough for me to have tackled that sailing.

We drove around the Island but have to go back as we ran out of daylight, however there is lots more to do in the area and we only have four days total before we move on to North Carolina.
The area is so marshy that parts of the road are built up over the wetlands.

Inside the National Park.

The whole area is so full of such interesting history and is such a quaint area, going to really enjoy the next few days.
