Canso and Grassy Island

This morning we headed for Canso and a National Heritage Site on Grassy Island that none of us knew much about.
First we came across Rook Island Lighthouse, one lighthouse keeper quit when his six year old had to row across to go to school, can you imagine.

On into Canso which has kept much of its history and charm

This is the Whitman home, museum and tourist info, Mr. Whitman was quite a wealthy merchant in the 1700's

To get to the Grassy Island site, parks provides you with a free ride, here is our boat.

Looking back from the boat, it took only about 7 minutes to get across.

Grassy Island is often called the Forgotten Settlement, it was here during the 17 and 18 centuries that the French and English battled over pieces of Atlantic Canada. Fort William Augustus was built in the middle of the island and a settlement built up around it. The settlement was destroyed by fire by an expedition from Louisbourg and never recovered.

The bushes are brown today and our guide told us that just a couple days ago they were green, then Earl came along and the salt water spray covered the island and then dried and the salt burnt the plants.

Back over on the mainland, and did I mention, that Canso is the most easterly spot in mainland Canada, anyway, you should have seen the size of the rosehips.

Going back out of town we stopped at the TransAtlantic Cable Building, they say they are going to restore it but they better do it soon, the hurricane had taken more tiles from the roof.

Oh, look who is here, it is our grandson Matt, he sent us a picture today of his latest catch.
Now Marnie, travelling is great but sometimes not being there also makes you cry.
