The Bonavista Peninsula

Aug 19th was not to exciting so no blog, we just moved from Twillingate to Charleston, it was a good day, uneventful, Tanya and Curtis liked riding up front in the coach.

Yesterday, Aug 20th was exciting, we did some of the Bonavista Peninsula and worked hard at it for 12 hours, getting home well after dark.

We started out with our stop at the tourist information and they were very helpful, so we have another load of papers and phamphlets to look through.

Our first stop was in Open Hall to view the church, it turned 100 years old in 2008, very lovely inside and out.

Down the road we traveled through Red Cliff to get to Tickle Cove, I had read about the Sea Arch Rock so had to go in search of. You had to park in someones yard, they did not seem to mind and walk just a short way out to the rocks, they were spectacular.

From here we went down another road to Keels, named they say for the place John Cabot came to shore after his long trip across the Atlantic to clean the bottom of his ship the Matthew.

As you can tell our day was dreary but not raining, so that was a plus.
Ron has forgot that we have been on holidays for three months, not a good time to get on the scale.

Back to Kings Cove, I wanted to walk to the Kings Cove Lighthouse, had read it was only 1.7km return and maybe it was a little more than that but was worth the walk.

Next thru Newmans Cove where we stopped by the Keates property(family from Revelstoke)and then on into Bonavista. First mistake, we probably could have used a full day just in Bonavista so had to put a little rush on things as now we are in the afternoon.

First stop was the National Park Ryan Premises, very interesting but could take hours and that could not happen today.

A brief stop to see a replica of John Cabot's ship the Matthew.

Off up to Cape Bonavista to see the Lighthouse.

Biggest dissappointment, only saw two puffins, so far out you could barely make out they were puffins.

A stop at Marsh's restaurant for dinner, very good food, now we are 6pm and still two stops to get in.
First one the Provincial Park Dungeon.

So one more try for puffins, light is fading but we will give it a try so drive off to Elliston.

At first we thought we were out of luck, then I stumbled over a little hill and found about five.
By the time we left there were many and we were so excited. The camera could not focus very well on telephoto so this was the best we could do.

Cute little things.

On the way home we saw a moose, a first Newfoundland moose for Tanya and Curtis.
Very good day indeed, going to do the Trinity area next.
