Around Twillingate

Always the decision, what should we do today, well perhaps we would get some ideas if we went back to that other tourist information, okay, good place to start. However let's go through Bayview to get there. Along the way I see a fellow cleaning his morning catch on his dock and get Ron to stop to take a picture. I asked the fellow if we could come take a picture and he was so wonderful, his name was Eric and he said he only got little ones today. Soon his wife Marcie joined us as she had seen us pull up.

He described to us the britches, which are only found in the female fish and only good if she is not spawning, they like them put in a little flour and fried up. They are called britches because that is exactly what they look like. The little white things beside them are the cod tongues and we have tasted them, they are okay, I like the cod meat better.

Eric showed off his little boat and sail to Ron, he built it all himself and last year he went out for a sail, 84 kms around New World Island.

His workshop on his pier was once all white but for fathers day one year his wife bought him some red paint and now he says he gets lots more visitors.

Just as we are about to leave he says "Would you like some fresh fish", I answer I would love to buy some from you, "No" he says he just wants me to have some, so he fileted and skinned them, now let me tell you what a supper we had tonight. Can you believe these Newfoundlanders.

After the information center we drove into Pikes Arm, this is Rogers Cove on our way in, just so many perfect harbours.

Sitting pretty for a picture.

The trail to the top of Pike's Arm was intersting but the view on top was spectacular and a little windy.

We had our picnic lunch after coming off the trail and then headed into Durrell, which is just another little section of Twillingate. They had a little museum and the view was pretty good right from there.

Hard to stop taking pictures.

After our delicious cod dinner, Ron and I thought we better get out and walk some of this off. We headed up toward the Long Point Lighthouse and found a walk at Sleepy Cove or an old copper mine known as the Seabreeze Municipal Park

The trail, as Ron would refer to it was the Jane Fonda Staircase to hell, it gave our legs a very good workout.

It was pretty up top and we could see lots of fishing boats out getting their cod.

It does not look so bad but it was such a good workout.

  1. If you get a chance go to the winery there. They have music and drinks (you can sample their wine) on Sunday I think. We also went to a dinner and musical comedy show there. the info was at the campground. It was neat too. Jane and Clyde
