Savannah, Georgia

Yesterday we left Myrtle Beach behind, sad to leave it was so beautiful, we walked on the beach everyday, it felt wonderful. However they say it will get cool, will probably even get snow sometime during the winter.

Traveling down through the South Carolina countryside was delightful, the scenery was wonderful and the plantations were gorgeous.

This morning we headed into Savannah, which is about 10 miles away, we are actually parked in South Carolina. Once we got there we took a trolley tour to get ourselves orientated. Here are some pictures of Savannah.

This tree is 280 years old, it is a live oak and look at all the Spanish Moss, which by the way is not Spanish and not moss but an actual live plant growing on the oak tree.

Did you know Forrest Gump was filmed in Savannah, here is the actual bench now in the museum.

We had our lunch at the Pirate House, one of the oldest buildings in Savannah and haunted as well, wonderful lunch.

Another of the stately homes.

Almost every two blocks there is a small park which makes the city feel very green.

Look at this for a police car, sign on the front says choose your ride, taxi is 20 or the other choice is 1800.
Beside it this beauty.

Just down the street from the police station is the Colonial Park Cemetery.

It was in this cemetery that during the civil war when the union army took over the city they set up camp in the cemetery, once the army was gone they discovered lots of the headstones were knocked over or altered, some people had now died before they were born or were 600 years old when they died. The city tried to clean up the area and not knowing where some of the headstones belonged they lined them up against the east fence.

Right beside the cemetery was the dueling area where if you had a problem with someone you had a duel, at least it wasn't far to take the body of the loser.

Cathedral of St John the Baptist

Absolutely beautiful inside, what is gold in color is real gold.

Another of the little squares.

This was in Forsyth Park, where the monument to the confederate soldier stands.

Beautiful fountain, copy of one in Paris but they brag because they got it from a mail order catalogue for 2500.00.

Oh, yes this is the park where Forrest Gump sat, the bench was sitting right where the flowers are and he was waiting for the Number 9 bus.

If you remember the spot in the movie where the feather came off the top of the church down to Forrest on the bench, well this is the church just across the street.

They are getting all decorated out for Christmas.

And of course, who has not heard of Paula Deen, this is her restaurant that she has with her sons, and it is called The Lady and Sons, right next door is the Paula Deen store, might have to go back and get an apron.

The tree sitting in Ellis square, this square was a parking garage up to six years ago, now the parking garage is 4 stories high below ground.

Ron found Johnny Mercer, he wrote Moon River and the Chattanoga Choo Choo.
